About MOTS-c

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than the nuclear genome, which places it in the small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides alongside humanin and the SHLPs. It was first characterised by Lee and colleagues at the University of Southern California in 2015, and circulating levels are reported to decline with age.

Research areas

AMPK activation through the folate-methionine cycle and downstream AICAR accumulation; insulin-sensitivity and glucose-uptake models; skeletal-muscle metabolism and exercise physiology; and the stress-dependent translocation of the peptide to the nucleus, where it has been shown to regulate adaptive gene expression.
